Puerto Portals committed to a plastic-free sea

More than eight million tonnes of plastic are dumped into the ocean every year, making this waste a serious problem for the marine ecosystem. The Puerto Portals Sailing School together with the organisation Mar de Fondo have organised several days of cleaning the seabed, the coast and the beaches throughout the summer.

The marina has made available to the volunteers all the equipment of the Sailing School to facilitate the collection of waste, in total. during the season, 342 kilos of plastics originating from different areas of the Mediterranean have been removed., these include a large number of microplastics, bottles, swabs, shoes, metal and fibre objects, among others.

Pol Gehrig, representative of the Mar de Fondo association, and Marta Reynés, director of the Puerto Portals Sailing School, were present during Friday’s event, during which 103 kilos of rubbish were removed important work that has been carried out during the season and the importance of looking to the future and remain consistent and committed to this issue.

The Sailing School has carried out important awareness-raising and educational work through the Multiactivity classes, explaining to the children week after week the problem of plastic pollution in the sea, pointing out interesting facts to make them aware of the seriousness of the issue and, finally, providing real solutions: reduce, reuse, recycle and repair.

During the week-long course, several plastic collection days are organised on the Oratory beach and the variety of marine life in Mediterranean areas is explained, as well as the repercussions this problem has on biodiversity.

Puerto Portals stands out for its social and environmental commitment through various actions that take place throughout the year, such as the firm commitment together with 52 SUPER SERIES in the annual regatta to remove waste found in the Bay of Palma and to raise awareness of this problem; the non-profit events that aim to raise funds for various associations on the island, like the SOS Animal Party, or the stands that it lends in its well-known markets to various organisations such as Mallorca Sense Fam, which has raised more than 5,000€ in the sixth edition of the The Sunset Market.
