Otto Pohlmann’s team has won the last two races of the competition, which has enabled them to take the lead in the final standings.
The German vessel Meerblick has won on the last day of the Mediterranean Cup in the Dragon classorganised this weekend by the Club de Regatas de Puerto Portals, in which eleven boats representing four countries took part.
The team of Otto Pohlmann has shown why he was one of the favourites and has imposed his law on the last day of competition by winning the final two races, a result that has taken him to the top of the general standings.
The day was promising from the start. Up to four participants were in with a chance of winning the championship. With the fifth race of the competition, the first of the day, the discard came into play and the wind offered good conditions from first thing in the morning. With this background, the last day of the IV Mediterranean Cup started at 11:05 a.m., with a wind of 12 knots of 075.
The Meerblick started the final day in fourth position, but only two points behind Capa and Gunter, who were tied on points at the top of the provisional standings, and in a technical tie with third-placed Mr Nova. With everything to be decided in two rounds, Otto Pohlmann’s team did not fail to win both races. In total, he has three partial victories, a second and a third place, as well as a sixth place, a result that has been discarded.
Otto Pohlmann, owner of Meerblick, thanked Puerto Portals for its efforts in organising both the Mediterranean Cup and the Dragon Winter Series: “Puerto Portals knows what it is doing and does it in the best possible way”. The German sailor highlighted ‘how good it is to have so many Dragon class boats here’ and hopes to be able to continue racing more regattas in Mallorca.
For his part, Spaniard Capa was unable to defend Saturday’s gains and finished in second place in the overall standings after two third places today. The podium of the IV Mediterranean Cup organised by Puerto Portals was completed by the British sailor Bear, who thanks to his partial results finished ahead of the Spaniard Mr. Grosso. Nova, in fourth place, tied on points with the third-placed team.
The director of Puerto Portals, Álvaro Irala, has been very satisfied with the Dragon Class season in Mallorca. ‘Despite the difficulties this year, our entire team has worked hard to make these competitions possible, and they have been very well received,’ he said.
Likewise, Irala recalls that Puerto Portals has been committed to the Dragon class for five years. ‘Last season we had 54 boats in competition and although this year has been complicated, we are continuing with the same drive. Next season we will maintain our regatta calendar and try to host some top level trophies’.
As for the possibility of organising a local event to replace the cancelled European Championships that Puerto Portals was supposed to host in mid-April, Irala is optimistic: ‘We are working to make it happen, but nothing is set in stone yet’.
