The fashion industry in the Balearic islands generates a 572 million euros turnover

Mallorca Design Day is supported by the Business Innovation Institute of the Balearic Islands

The fashion industry counts with 119 companies in the Balearic islands that produce 572 million euros in sales and employ 3,627 workers, according to theBusiness Innovation Institute of the Balearic Islands (IDI). 50% of these 119 companies produce shoes and leather goods, 30% are clothing and textile brands, and the remaining 20% make fine jewellery and costume jewellery.

The Balearic Government, by means of the General Management of Industrial Politics, has started the clusterization process of the fashion sector, considered to be strategic according to the Industrial Plan. Contests like #mallorcadesignday by Prêt à Portals that have the aim of presenting new talents within the industry, count with the support of the IDI. At this year’s edition of #mallorcadesignday the number of presented proposals has multiplied by four: 121 collections by designers from all over the world have been received, 35 of them being Balearic. This matter brings to light the great creative moment that is taking place in the island’s fashion industry.

This Balearic event is the only one in Spain awarding prizes to curvy fashion designers. The 2019 national curvy winner is Majorcan: Carla García Parrondo. We will see her collection, Komorobi on the catwalk next May 24th during an important event that is being prepared in Puerto Portals… The jury of this event will be presided by Modesto Lomba, current President of the Spanish Fashion Designers Association (ACME), and it will count with high standard professionals of the fashion world such as ACME’s Executive Manager, Pepa Bueno, Angel Schlesser’s creative director; Daniel Rabaneda and the designers Moisés Nieto and María Lafuente, amongst others. They will be in charge of deciding what proposal out of the 6 Balearic selected ones, is the winner. At the event on May 24th we will also see the collections of the international winner, Nicolás Sánchez (Argentina) and national winner, David de Calle (Madrid). The event will also include Devota & Lomba’s stunning fashion show.

This year, #mallorcadesignday has added the major support of Puerto Portals, clearlyengaged, as always, with the world of fashion, design and new talents. Fashion is in the DNA of this emblematic Majorcan sports marina right from its beginnings, more than 30 years ago. Puerto Portals has always chosen to bring great international fashion brands to the marina and has surrounded itself with a top quality offering that has become a global landmark.
