The ships signed up for the III Puerto Portals Dragon Winter Series face from tomorrow until Sunday the final phase of the competition, that has turned Majorca into the landmark of the Dragon Class in Europe, and has promoted Palma’s Bay to be the host of the most important continental events: Puerto Portals European Grand Prix Final (November 2019) and Puerto Portals Dragon European Championship (20th to 26th April 2020). It has also helped bringing together the fleet of this historical monotype, designed in 1929, which formed part of the Olympic program until 1972.
More than 50 ships from 15 countries will gather in Puerto Portals to participate in the race that will determine the winner of the Winter Series. The circuit has consisted of seven tests as of today. The third and last event will start tomorrow Friday. The start of the first leg is scheduled at 14pm. The organization plans to carry out two tests per day. The award ceremony will take place in Puerto Portals on completion of Sunday’s race.
The ship Rocknrolla, commanded by Dmitry Samokhin, Kasper Harsberg and Andrdey Kirilyuk, is the outstanding leader. The second and third places obtained in the last rounds- disputed on January 17th- placed the Russian team at the lead of the general classification with 14 points, and a fourth place (discarded) as the poorest performance over a total of seven partials. Its most direct follower, the German Ingrid, skippered by Dirk Pramann, adds 41 points, with a discard on the 21st place obtained after the fourth test. The British ship Louise Racing, owned by Grant Gordon, faces the final event of the III Puerto Portals Dragon Winter Series from the third position, far from the leader, but at a one-point distance from the second classified. The best classified Spanish Dragon is the Capa, skippered by Carlos Carbajal, who holds the nineteenth position.
The weather forecast reports SW light winds, with 10-knot maximum gusts for Friday. The situation will be very similar on Saturday and Sunday, although the breeze could be intensified if the sky is clear and the thermal south wind, typical of Palma’s Bay, is generated.
The III Puerto Portals Dragon Winter Series are organized by the Club of Regattas Puerto Portalsin association with the Spanish Dragon Class Association, the International Dragon Class and the Balearic Sailing Federation.
