Puerto Portals, showcase of Spanish fashion with #mallorcadesignday

The rain that fell over Majorca last Friday couldn’t overshadow the second edition of #mallorcadesignday, which took place on May 24th at Puerto Portals. More than 600 guests attended that night an event that gathered in Majorca the best designers, international models and renowned experts, journalists and top-level influencers within the world of fashion.

The winner in the Balearic category has been the Majorcan designer Marisa del Hoyo with the collection Nanook. It was one of the awards that hadn’t been revealed yet. The jury, presided by the designer and President of ACME, Modesto Lomba, selected his collection amongst the 6 Balearic finalists that have shown their collections today in Portals.

The gala hosted by Tania Llasera had to change its initial location and be relocated to the backstage area due to the rain. Nevertheless, nothing was overshadowed and the designer’s collections were shown on the catwalk. The host pleaded for clothing size democracy and to women’s mental and physical health.

The Argentinian designer, Nicolás Sánchez, winner of the International collection Tokyo, the designer from Madrid, David de Calle, winner of the National category with Pielofobia, and the Majorcan Carla García Parrondo, with her collection Komorobi, winner of the National Curvy, were acclaimed by the attending audience.

The final touch was given by Devota&Lomba’s fashion show. This has been the first show of Modesto Lomba in Spain this 2019. The designer has presented in Majorca a selection of his last collection, which was conceived to shine in Puerto Portals.

A total of 121 collections from all around the world have been submitted for this second edition of #mallorcadesignday, multiplying by four the number of proposals that were submitted on the previous edition of the contest, held in 2017.

The fashion contest #mallorcadesignday arose with the aim of promoting and giving visibility to the work of new designers from Baleares, from the rest of Spain and internationally. The contest is targeted to people of any nationality that are studying or have finished their Fashion Design studies. It is also open to people linked to the world of design and/or tailoring,that don’t have a university degree or a commercial sales brand, consolidated or renowned within the fashion world.

Sóller, Toni Garay, who has placed threads and reel threads (rollets) from old Majorcan textile factories as main elements.
