Nine years of solidarity

The NGO Mallorca Sense Fam distributed food products for a total of 647,640lb in 2017.

Mallorca Sense Fam was founded in October 2009 as a consequence to the poverty derived from Spain’s economic crisis which started in 2008. From its start, the aim of this Majorcan institution is to raise society’s awareness towards this issue and help families in great need by dispensing food, toiletries and household products to them.

With the help of more than 150 volunteers and collaborating entities such as the Consell de Mallorca, El Corte Inglés, Obra Social “la Caixa” or Quely, monetary or food contributions are collected to meet the needs of Majorca’s most deprived families.

Throughout 2017 Mallorca Sense Fam cared for and helped 1,130 families, therefore assisting more than 5,000 people with a total of 647,640lb distributed all year round. During 2018, the NGO intends to increase the food collection in partnership with several companies, entities and individuals, with the purpose of increasing the number of receivers and delivered food products.

The organisation obtains the food supplies from the Spanish Agricultural Guarantee Fund (FEGA), the Fund for European Aid to the Most Deprived (FEAD), the Food Bank, private donations and specific food collecting initiatives. Usually the recipient families are young couples with children, unemployed or with minimum income; elderly people living by themselves or single-parent destitute families.

Puerto Portals and Mallorca Sense Fam share a strong partnership; the organisation is present in each of the port’s markets: The Sunset Market, Christmas Market and Farmers’ Market, in the latter, the initiative “One for one” takes place; every time a visitor purchases an item marked with this specific tag, Puerto Portals donates the same quantity to the fair trade basket which is finally handed over to the NGO.
